My Addiction Personified

You promised me a happy world
without pain or tears.
But instead you gave me misery
and a thousand fears.

You promised me I'd have control
of my destiny.
But instead you took my soul away-
Why'd you lie to me?

I thought about you constantly-
invading my dreams.
I cried the nights you visited me-
never what you seemed.

But now I have control again,
you don't always win.
Even though the steel calls out for me,
I won't cut again.
